t h e  d o c t o r   w i t h i n by DR. O'Shea
 I N T R O D U C T I O N

When it comes to health in today's world, it's a matter of protection: taking great care to fortify ourselves and our children against an increasingly hostile environment.

There are so many forces arrayed against the natural vitality of the body, against the glowing good health which has been our birthright in the past and which the last generation had come to take for granted. A very different world today. Robust good health for today's children can no longer be presumed just by following common sense traditions of healthy living, or by listening to unreliable notions of health broadcast all day on TV.

Here is some of the evidence of the predatory forces at large today, obstacles to normal good health:

  • The skyrocketing of childhood allergies and asthma

The prevalence of experimental Genetically Modified foods in the diet

  • The presence of over 60,000 chemicals to which we are at risk of daily exposure through air, food, and water

  • The unprecedented number of vaccines mandated for American children and adults today

  • The ongoing cover-up of the continuing epidemic of autism in the US, which cases today may number anywhere between 1 and 4 million

  • The increasing almost random incidence of malignant tumors in seemingly healthy people who have none of the standard risk factors for cancer

  • The absence of regulation ensuring the safety of produce and processed foods in our supermarkets

  • The increased pitch of the marketing of prescription drugs, as seen in every possible information medium: TV, internet, magazines, videos, radio, medical literature, etc. The 10% infertility rate among American married couples

  • The 14% enrollment in learning disability programs for US children

  • The 1 in 6 rate of children with a neurodevelopmental disorder

  • The 60% overweight and obesity figure among Americans

  • The epidemic incidence of cancer today among non-risk groups, that is, in children, in individuals who are in apparently good health, not overweight, non-smokers,--in other words, cancer in healthy people.

Our last line of defense is to educate ourselves, really educate ourselves. But education in the classical sense, using our powers of careful discrimination to detect the difference between standard programming and true factual information. Unfortunately, reliable knowledge is hard-won, requiring a bit of study and reflection. And the drive to keep digging until we find it. [see Chapters section, to the left]

To be molded by standard programming on the other hand is very easy: just sit back and absorb the two second sound bytes that are repeated over and over all day every day in all the media.

This website is dedicated to providing referenced, scientific data on a variety of holistic and alternative medicine topics, focusing on universal principles, sound physiology, and the undiluted healing powers of the body itself.

There is no disease, no illness, no physical imbalance which will not respond to the innate, healing power of nature, once it is summoned. Once it is set free.

Healers of the past have already solved most health problems of today. Unfortunately, most of their work died with them. Their voices have been muted by the din of a thousand self-proclaimed experts and Magic Bullet salesmen. This website seeks to draw from the forgotten wisdom of the past, and to honor its simplicity.

Despite what you may hear, our health is deteriorating year by year. The rates of all degenerative diseases in this country are increasing. We have more asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, depression, arthritis, allergies, digestive disorders, and obesity than ever before in history. Our children are fatter, sicker and dumber than ever before. At the same time we spend more and more money each year for "Health Care." We have more doctors and more drugs than any civilization in history. But it's not working.

What's not working is the underlying idea. If doctors and drugs could give us better health, we'd already be better. That is why the field of holistic medicine is growing so fast - it's survival.

Today the field of alternative medicine is like a wild jungle, full of unsubstantiated claims, junk science, and marketing hype. To trek through that terrain alone, without a guide - just doing internet searches for natural medicine or holistic health will soon plunge the reader into a miasma of cut and paste ad copy.

The healthiest people in human history were groups who were geographically isolated from "civilization." These people had no specialists, no HMOs, no prescription drugs, and no immense hospitals. They were never subverted with the idea that the responsibility for their own health lay outside themselves. Except in the cases of traumatic injury, for most of their lives they looked to the body's inner wisdom, and trusted only that. And it worked - they had beautiful teeth, strong bones, and very little degenerative disease.

Today it's almost as though our ancestors are trying to speak to us. The searching, jumbled mess we find in the field of today's Alternative Medicine has a real, valid, vital, underlying power source: the impulse to give the body time to heal itself, to let it try and put the steps of the healing process together all by itself, without potent, unproven interventions - in short, to listen first to

"Inflammation: The Real Cause of All Disease

and How to Reduce and Prevent It"

by BodyEcology.com

The Body Ecology Diet bookaddresses the sources of inflammation - one of the silent causes of aging and disease. Get your copy to read how healing your digestion can reduce inflammation in your body and help you get well!

Did you know that inflammation is the common link between such debilitating conditions as Alzheimers, heart disease, cancer, and arthritis?

Did you know inflammation is thought to be the culprit behind the visible signs of aging?

Inflammation is a wellness buzz-word these days, and for good reason. If you reduce inflammation in your body, you'll not only look and feel younger, but you'll significantly lower your risk for chronic disease!

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is your body's response to stress - whether from your diet, lifestyle or environment. Think of what happens when you catch a cold. You may experience inflammation in the form of a fever as your body heats up to eradicate the effects of the invading virus.

This kind of inflammation is good, but the modern epidemic of chronic, low-grade inflammation destroys the balance in your body. When your body's systems experience a constant inflammatory response, you become more susceptible to aging and disease.

COFFEE

Is coffee good or bad for your health?

How would you like a drug which could lower your risk of Parkinson's disease, diabetes, as well as colon cancer? A substance which could lift your mood and relieve headaches? A drug that could lower your risk of getting cavities? Coffee appears to be that substance.coffee beans

Studies indicate coffee reduces the risk for diabetes and Parkinson's

Some studies have shown that coffee may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. After analyzing data on 120,000 people over an 18-year period (1), researchers at Harvard have concluded that drinking 1 to 3 cups of caffeinated coffee each day can reduce diabetes risk by several percentage points, compared with not drinking coffee at all.

Even more significant, is the fact that in this study, having 6 cups or more per day slashed men's risk by 54% and women's risk by 30% over those who avoided coffee. This study is the latest of hundreds of studies which suggest that coffee may be something of a health food - especially in higher amounts.

Over the past 20 years, over 19,000 studies have been conducted to examine the impact of coffee on one's health. Overall, the results are good news for the 110 million Americans who routinely enjoy this traditional morning ritual.

"By and large, the studies (2) show that coffee is far more beneficial than it is harmful," says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, researcher at Vanderbilt University's Institute for Coffee Studies, which conducts its own research and tracks coffee studies around the globe. For most individuals, studies show that very little bad comes from drinking coffee, but a lot of good.

At least 6 studies (3) indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis have up to 80% lower risks of developing Parkinson's disease, with 3 of those studies indicating that the more coffee they drink, the lower the risk. Other studies indicate that, compared to not drinking coffee, drinking at least 2 cups per day can lead to a 25% lower risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in the risk of liver cirrhosis, and nearly 50% the risk of gallstones.

coffee beans roasted
Is it the caffeine that is responsible for those benefits? Is it the antioxidants in coffee beans, some of which become especially potent during the roasting process?

Studies indicate that it might be both those factors.

"The evidence is very strong that regular coffee consumption reduces the risk for Parkinson's disease and that in the case of Parkinson's disease, the benefits are directly related to caffeine," according to Dr. DePaulis (2).

Researchers believe that some of coffee's reported beneficial effects are a direct result of its higher caffeine content: An 8-ounce cup of coffee contains about 85 mg of caffeine - about 3 times more than the same serving of tea or soda.

In another study (4), researchers looked at the coffee consumption and caffeine intake in 8,000 Japanese-American men. During the course of the study which lasted nearly 30 years, about 100 men developed Parkinson's disease. The risk of developing Parkinson's decreased gradually as the daily consumption of coffee rose from 4 ounces to more than 24 ounces per day.

In addition, the researchers found the same decrease in risk regardless of the source of caffeine. The men whose intake was less than 2.8 milligrams of caffeine per day were nearly 3 times more likely to develop Parkinson's than those whose caffeine intake was more than 107 milligrams from non-coffee sources.

Coffee and reduced diabetes risks

But other benefits can be derived from coffee which have nothing to do with caffeine. Coffee is loaded with antioxidants, including a group of compounds called "quinines" which when administered to rats in a laboratory, increases their insulin sensitivity. The increased sensitivity improves the body's response to insulin.

Researchers don't know exactly why coffee is beneficial for diabetes. Coffee also contains large quantities of the antioxidants tocopherols and chlorogenic acid, as well as minerals such as magnesium. All of those components have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.

This may explain why in the Harvard study (1), those drinking decaffeinated coffee also showed a reduced diabetes risk, although the reduction in risk was 50% that of those drinking caffeinated coffee.

Coffee and cavities

Some researchers believe another compound called "trigonelline" - which gives coffee its bitter taste and its aroma - may be responsible for giving coffee both anti-adhesive and antibacterial properties which help prevent dental cavities from forming.

Coffee consumption and moderation

On the other hand, it is clear that coffee is not for everyone. In excessive amounts - meaning more than whatever an individual's body can tolerate - coffee can cause nervousness, jitters, and rapid heartbeat.

Although studies investigating any relationship between higher cholesterol levels and coffee have yielded conflicting results, it is believed that in some people, drinking excessive amounts of coffee might cause elevated cholesterol levels (5).

However, coffee drinkers who consume filtered coffee should not worry themselves with respect to cholesterol levels, because research indicates that it is the coffee oils which are mainly responsible for the rise in cholesterol in people who drink nonfiltered or boiled coffee.

Most recent large studies show no significant adverse affects on most healthy people, although pregnant women, heart patients, and those at risk for osteoporosis may still be advised to limit or avoid coffee.

coffee versus soda
All in all, I certainly believe that coffee and caffeine are far less dangerous than soda. especially the "diet"kind.

One thing is certain: coffee is usually one of the most heavily sprayed crops, and is often contaminated with pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides. Therefore if you do drink coffee, you would be well advised to drink organic coffee only.

It is also a good idea to avoid putting milk and sugar in your coffee. The milk and sugar in your coffee are in fact much worse for you than the coffee itself.

Finally, use only non-bleached filters. White coffee filters, which most coffee drinkers use, are bleached with chlorine and some of this chlorine will end up in your coffee during the brewing process.

CLEAN THE CELLS OF METALS

Oral Chelation

Heavy Metal Toxicity

Scientists tell us that the human body often contains, as a result of the toxic environment we live in, microscopic pieces of heavy metal, such as mercury (from your fillings) or lead, or even iron. These tiny pieces of metal are like time bombs, waiting to cause trouble. These are so minuscule that you could think of them as almost the size of atoms. Perhaps several atoms, but these are tiny pieces of metal which are, actually, toxic. While generally overlooked by traditional medicine, these traces of heavy metals in our bodies probably cause and agravate most health conditions, including heart disease and cancer.

These pieces of heavy metal originating from our environment, our fillings, our diet, can be so minuscule that they can easily become embedded inside some tissue in the body. The metal could be located inside the liver, for instance, the kidneys, the heart, just about anywhere in the body.

heavy-metal chelation

Please note that you could have millions of these tiny pieces of metal inside your body! What are the implications of this?

When a free radical happens to collide with one of these tiny pieces of toxic metal, instead of this collision creating a single new free radical, there could be a chain-reaction of MILLIONS of new free radicals produced from this one impact. This is the devastating effect that free radicals have on the body.

Free radicals are a fact of life, they are present within us, moving along, and somewhere along the way this minuscule particle hits a microscopic piece of toxic metal.

We now have 1,000,000 new free radicals created in that instant. Each new free radical moves off in some new direction, spreading throughout the body. Many of these new free radicals will hit other pieces of toxic metal, causing other MILLIONS offree radicals to become newly created, each of them ready to damage your DNA and increase your chances for cancer.oral chelation to fight free-radicals

It's important to keep in mind that we don't need to be TOO worried about this because this has been going on inside our bodies for years and we're still alive!

So what should we do about this heavy metal and free radical problem then? We should:

  • try to find ways to stop metals from creating free radical chain reactions in our bodies (Vitamin C,vitamin E and other antioxydants can help us do this)
  • try to prevent these free radicals from ever coming into contact with toxic metals in our bodies in the first place.

Fortunately, there is a way to accomplish this. This method is called oral chelation.

Guidelines for a successful heavy metal detoxification program using oral chelation

First, do NOT attempt to fast during a heavy metal detoxification program and make sure you ingest a lot of protein. It is very important to have a high protein diet during a heavy metal detox because the sulfur-bearing amino acids in the protein will greatly facilitate detoxification.

Maintain 2 to 3 bowel movements per day. If you are not having this many bowel movements per day, try increasing your intake of psyllium.

Remove toxic metals from the connective tissue with chlorella.

Chlorella is an important part of the detoxification program, as approximately 90% of the mercury in our bodies is eliminated through the stool. Chlorella is an algae which has high levels of chlorophyll. Because it is one of the purest, most potent foods on earth, it is almost impossible to take too much chlorella.

Detoxify from mercury using garlic, MSM and cilantro.

Other weapons in our heavy metal detoxification program include: garlic, MSM and cilantro. Start eating garlic daily, the food rather than a supplement, to enhance sulfur stores. 2-3 cloves a day is an excellent idea. Make sure you CRUSH the garlic to release its active ingredients.

Start taking MSM. MSM is a form of sulfur which acts on cell membranes and which will help your body eliminate the mercury.

Start taking cilantro. Cilantro will help mobilize mercury out of the tissue so the chlorella can bind to it and allow it to be excreted from the body through the stools. Cilantro is available in most grocery stores. I just add mine to the vegetable juice I prepare in my juicer. My favorite source for organic cilantro in 1 pound bags is here.

During heavy metal detoxification, make sure you take a multi-purpose vitamin which contains all the essential minerals. It's important to have a generally healthy mineral base.

Remove heavy metals using NAC and EDTA.

Finally, our most powerful tools to assist us in our heavy metal detoxification: NAC and EDTA.

N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC ) is another very important component of a good mercury detoxification program.

Start taking EDTA on an empty stomach on a daily basis. The difference between oral EDTA chelation and IV chelation therapy is discussed in detail here.

Finally, throughout your toxic metal detoxification program, it is imperative to first start with a colon cleanse (this should be the first step of any detoxification program) and maintain your liver in an optimum state.

Real Superhumans1 Sci Channel

When I was a child I used to jump out the windows, throw sticks, and stones and hit just about anything. We lived next to a wooded area and my brothers and I had special trees we would climb, and swing from. Living every day outside until it got dark made us very strong. I ran almost twice as fast as anyone else, and later was the wining pitcher in the Little League. As I devoted more time to studies I noticed how much better my youngest brother surpassed me in all the sports. He hit a hole in one at golf, and bowled a 300. I remember there was many years when no team ever beat us in sports.

We lived with our grandparents. Both grandfathers owned produce stores. My mother's father was very strong. He told us how fast he used to run, and that when he had a contest with his brothers. He lifted a table of potatoes that weight 1223 lbs. on his back; but his brother lifted one with two more pounds on it and won.

The stories he told us made us think that there were no limits to the human potentials. The ancient mysteries and myths of past heroes fascinated us.  There were many books we read, and our dad had a very good collection of comic books that were filled with super heroes.

In the seminary, I studied the Latin, and Greek myths, and especially the lives of the saints. The Bible was filled with saints that did supernatural deeds for the plan of God that help mold our spiritual formation. We also studied the religions of the world and how the sages meditated to become a better person.

While studying these books, I learned about how holy men could not be kept in prisons, because they were always able to escape. Zen masters practiced for long periods alone in caves; until they discovered a new teaching. They taught how every word has power, and special words were saved for sacred mantras. Meditation, contemplation, Zen, Tai Chi and many other techniques have there origins from the original discoveries that the ancients practiced.

Many advances to the human being came from evolutionary improvements; yet some unique advances came suddenly. These were call quantum evolution. Some advances came about because we discovered something better: like the power of the group, the protection of caves, the trees, and the use of tools, weapons, the power of fire, eating meat, and learning agriculture.

Much later humans developed language, and cities. The built programs to tell the seasons, navigate and build huge monuments. Then the tools for a democratic society was developed in the Golden Age, and modern mankind was born.

Along with the techniques on the masters, sacred scripture taught us how to live the true way of life, that we are still trying to follow. Psychological discoveries help us develop techniques to use the mind to heal the body through positive reinforcement, biofeedback, and visualization.

Along with prayer, meditation, contemplation, Zen, yoga, tai Chi, body work, there is visualization and group dynamics. All of these can be used together for optimum growth, and development by practicing Holistics and emboding the results.

A Pill to Prevent Hearing Loss?
Early research in animals suggests it might be possible

(HealthDay News) -- Vitamin supplements appear to prevent noise-induced hearing loss in lab animals, a new study shows.

According to researchers, the finding suggests that it may be possible to create a pill that protects against noise-induced and even age-related hearing loss in humans.

Two studies found that giving supplements containing antioxidants [beta carotene and vitamins C and E] and the mineral magnesium to test animals before they were exposed to a loud noise prevented both temporary and permanent hearing loss.

In the first study, vitamin supplements protected guinea pigs exposed to four hours of 110-decibel noise, similar to levels reached at a rock concert. In the second study, vitamin supplements prevented hearing loss in mice exposed to a single loud noise.

The findings were to be presented Wednesday at the Association for Research in Otolaryngology annual meeting. Previous research showed that antioxidants can also protect hearing days after exposure to loud noise.

"What is appealing about this vitamin 'cocktail' is that previous studies in humans, including those demonstrating successful use of these supplements in protecting eye health, have shown that supplements of these particular vitamins are safe for long-term use," University of Florida researcher Colleen Le Prell, senior author of the studies, said in a news release.

About 26 million Americans have noise-induced hearing loss, according to the U.S. National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, which funded the two studies. Temporary noise-induced hearing loss typically goes away after a few hours or days as cells in the inner ear heal. But repeated noise-induced temporary hearing loss can lead to permanent hearing loss. Le Prell and colleagues believe that prevention of temporary hearing loss may help prevent permanent hearing loss.

Le Prell and colleagues are currently studying the use of vitamin supplements in college students who wear MP3 music players and in noise-exposed military troops and factor workers in Spain and Sweden.

"Ear protection, such as ear plugs, is always the best practice for the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss, but in those populations who don't or can't wear hearing protection, for people in which mechanical devices just aren't enough, and for people who may experience unexpected noise insult, these supplements could provide an opportunity for additional protection," Le Prell said.

The American Academy of Family Physicians has more about noise-induced hearing loss.

DOCTOR JOHN CHRISTOPHER'S MUCUSLESS MEALS: DO & DO NOTS

The second step to healing the body is for an individual to eliminate the mucus-forming foods from the diet. Using this procedure, not only are the sinuses, the bronchi, and the lungs cleared but also the constipating mucus (catarrh) in the tissues of the body from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet.

If this diet is followed as outlined, we guarantee that after a short time you will have much more satisfaction from the foods we recommend, for better health, than you ever had from the food of your former diet.

Now, what can you eat?

The Do's:

Any whole, live, raw foods. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and a small amount of fresh fish or chemical free chicken.

The Dont's:

Salt, eggs, all refined sugars, meat, all milk products, flours and flour products.

Do not be concerned because this diet omits meat and the commercial types of protein and don't worry about adding protein, as you will get all that you need in these foods. The gorilla is built on the same order as the human being, and he gets all the protein he needs from just fruits, nuts and seeds.

The best food to start the day is fresh fruit or a good low heated whole grain. This should be a cereal in its wholesome state (with life in it). It can be prepared in a thermos bottle: Take a thermos bottle, fill in the early afternoon or evening one-third full of grain, then finish filling the thermos bottle with boiling water. Turn the thermos over two or three times to mix the grain and water. The next morning the grain is ready for consumption.

Sprouted grains are another excellent and nutritious food source. Alternate the grains.

Almost any live seed or grain can be sprouted, find the one you like and enjoy.

Fruit and vegetable juices along with dried fruits are another wonderful source for this diet.

There are also thousands of salad combinations available, with some investigation and experimentation, you will never run short of interesting combinations. This diet can be challenging as well as rewarding. The health and wellness that will result from following this diet is reward enough.

LIFE QUESTIONS
March 2, 2009

What is the real temperature? My wall says its 30*. Dish WC says 16* outside, 23mph wind NW, 232 wind chill index~ or -3*. I thought it was colder.

So, I went down stairs to see how my mother was doing. She was up sitting in her chair, and I asked her if she was cold. I asked her why she was up? Its 3:23.

She said, that she was not cold, and said , is that the time. I said yes, go back to bed. She said, I want to get something to eat first. I said, go to bed, I’m cold and want to go back to sleep.

It was not too cold. What woke me up? Maybe I heard her? My shoulder was sore, my shirt was a little damp, and my stomach a little upset. This could be symptoms of kidney upset too.

I put some Pain Rub on my shoulder, took an anti-acid, and drank half a glass of my kidney stone dissolve tonic, and tried to go back to sleep.

It was still a little cold in my room; so I turned my space heater on, and saw that a movie just started on the TV. It was called “Cop Land” and I watched it for quite a while and could not figure what it was all about, people dieing all over the place. I had to watch it till the end to find all about the story.

Maybe that is how with some things in life! We need for time to sort it all out.
